WG Ballot for 802.3ae Draft 3.0
Colleagues:
The 802.3 WG has voted to send IEEE P802.3ae (10 Gigabit Ethernet, Draft 3.0
to Working Group Ballot. Geoff Thompson has sent the formal announcement to
the 802.3 reflector, so you should have all the details about the process.
I would simply like to remind everyone that it is your duty as an 802.3
voter to review and comment on this draft.
It is crucially important that a Task Force have technical people from
outside the group examine the draft to see if it is clear, concise, and
consistent with the rest of the 802.3 Standard. When our draft is in WG
ballot, we will hope to receive the same careful scrutiny from the WG. The
WG should not become a rubber stamp for the work of a Task Force. If this
happens, the quality of our standard will suffer. We are fortunate that our
colleagues who have participated in earlier 802.3 projects have set the bar
at a high level. We must uphold this level of excellence and commitment.
Personally, I find the draft daunting. It's large (476 pages) and filled
with material that is, to say the least, unfamiliar to me. I've got some
long, hard hours ahead, and I hope that I will be able to make *some* useful
comments. But I am grateful to be a member of the Ethernet Standards
community. To me, it's a privilege to be able to work with such
knowledgeable, dedicated and interesting people on a standard that has
literally changed the world.
We are a small group whose work has a large effect, and as members of this
community I believe that it is our "civic duty" to make our standard the
best it can be.
