[802.3af] IEEE P802.3af 2nd. Working Group Recirculation Ballot and Comment

Dear IEEE P802.3 Voters & Participants:

This e-mail is to advise you of the Working Group 2nd recirculation and
electronic ballot for IEEE P802.3af (DTE Power via MDI), Draft 3.2
formally titled as:

   Information Technology -
Local & Metropolitan Area Networks -
Part 3: Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection
(CSMA/CD) Access Method and Physical Layer Specifications -
Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) Power via Media Dependent Interface (MDI)

A Little About This Project

"DTE power via MDI" is intended to operate over a 4-pair balanced
twisted-pair cabling infrastructure as described in ISO/IEC 11801-2000.
Although initial implementations are expected to make use of this clause to
provide powered wireless access points and Ethernet based IP telephones,
the clause is intended to address a much larger family of low-power devices
whose applications require connection to local area networks.

For example, it is expected that in the future as building cabling
infrastructures begin to support more building automation systems (BAS),
additional cabling guidelines will be implemented. BAS systems are used for
controlling building systems such as fire alarm, security and access
control (e.g., closed circuit television), and energy management systems
(e. g., heating, ventilation and air conditioning and lighting control).
One such standard that is to be published to support these systems with a
cabling infrastructure in EIA/TIA is the Building Automation Cabling
Standard for Commercial Buildings. The forthcoming TIA Standard will
specify a generic cabling system for building automation systems used in
commercial buildings for a multi-product, multi-vendor environment.

DTE Power via MDI will provide an enabling technology to migrate legacy BAS
systems to network and structured cabling infrastructure-based solutions.

The electronic ballot officially opens on:
     5 September 2002
and closes on:
     25 September 2002, midnight PDT

For the purposes of this ballot, the ballot group consists of any 802.3
member who was a voter as of the November 2001 Plenary Meeting and voted
during the WG Ballot for P802.3af D3.0. If you do not wish to change your
vote, it is not necessary to return a ballot. If you are not a member of the
ballot group, you may still submit comments as an observer.
