Colleagues, The first session of the Ethernet Support for the IEEE P802.1AS Time Synchronization Protocol Study Group (Time Sync Study Group) or TSSG, will be Friday, May 1 during the April/May 2009 802.3 Interim in Quebec City, Canada. Please see http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/interims/quebec_1_0509.html for details. As the TSSG was formed at the March 2009 802.3 WG meeting in Vancouver, the Interim schedule had already been set. Therefore, the TSSG will have a one-day session to present organizational and introductory material. The TSSG's work will require knowledge and coordination with a number of other standards projects. Topics to be covered: - Overview of the IEEE 802.1 AVB project and IEEE P802.1AS - http://www.ieee802.org/1/pages/avbridges.html - Overview of IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet Architecture - http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/ba/index.html - Overview of IEEE P802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet - http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/az/index.html - Overview of IEEE - 1588 - http://ieee1588.nist.gov/ - Overview of the IEEE Standards Association Process - http://standards.ieee.org/resources/development/index.html - Overview of the IEEE 802.3 Working Group process - http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/rules/index.html During the July Plenary and September Interim the TSSG will determine its scope of work and objectives. From this, it will present a PAR and 5 Criteria at the November Plenary. This is a tentative schedule and will be discussed further. This project is intended to provide 802.3 support for IEEE P802.1AS and its IEEE-1588 usage. Since there are other applications that may benefit from this project, it is appropriate to identify them early in the process to see if their requirements may fit into this work. Therefore if you have an application that fits into this category, you are invited to present it during the first meeting. Please do not provide solutions; it is too early in the process. Rather, please give a concise overview of the application and how it uses (or might use) IEEE-1588 in the context of IEEE 802.3. Please send a copy to the Chair by this Friday. The rules for presenters are covered on the TSSG home page at http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/time_adhoc/public/presentproc.html. The deadlines have been relaxed for this one meeting only. If you have any questions about presenting, please email the TSSG Chair. I look forward to seeing you in Quebec. Regards, Steve Steven B.
