Subject: [802.3] +++ 802.3bf 1st TASK FORCE REVIEW: IEEE P802.3bf TimeSync
Task Force Review Announcement
TO: IEEE P802.3bf particpants
Dear Colleagues:
This is the announcement of the electronic IEEE 802.3bf Task Force first
review on IEEE P802.3bf TimeSync. Instructions for accessing the draft and
submitting comments follow this announcement.
IEEE P802.3bf is an amendment to the IEEE Std 802.3-2008 which is available
through the Get802 program at the URL
[http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/802.3.html ].
The Project Authorization Request for this amendment is posted at
http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/bf/P802.3bf.pdf and includes the
following:
TITLE: Standard for Information technology--Telecommunications and
information exchange between systems--Local and
metropolitan area networks--Specific requirements Part 3: Carrier Sense
Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD)
Access Method and Physical Layer Specifications Amendment: Media Access
Control (MAC) service interface and management
parameters to support time synchronization protocols
SCOPE:
Amend IEEE Std 802.3-2008 to extend the Media Access Control service
interface and add management parameters to provide support for the IEEE
802.1AS time synchronization protocol.
PURPOSE:
Provide an accurate indication of the transmission and reception initiation
times of certain packets as required to support
IEEE P802.1AS.
NEED FOR THE PROJECT:
Ethernet can be applied in many new applications if a time synchronization
capability is added. Potentialnew applications include: Audio-Video
bridging; telecommunications; wireless backhaul; industrial control and
SmartGrid. For example Audio-Video bridging is targeted at mass market
consumer electronic products.
REVIEW SCOPE:
As a first Task Force review, the scope of the review is the entire D0.21
Draft.
REVIEW OPEN:
