UPDATE #3 - RECENT SBN ARTICLE:
I HAVE BEEN IN DISCUSSION AGAIN WITH THE CHAIR OF JC-61, AND HAVE RECEIVED THIS LETTER FROM HIM.
IT IS CLEAR, AS I STATED PREVIOUSLY, BOTH JEDEC, JC-61, AND OURSELVES HAVE BEEN MISREPRESENTED BY THE RECENT ARTICLE. WHICH WAS FACTUALLY INCORRECT.
FINALLY I AM TALKING DIRECTLY TO MARK LAPEDUS THIS AFTERNOON, AND WILL SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT AS FAR AS THE 802.11 WORKING GROUP.
HOPEFULLY, FACTUAL STATEMENTS WILL PREVAIL.
STUART
CHAIR, IEEE 802.11 WLANS WG

Colleagues in IEEE802.11
Yesterday, March 27th 2002, an article from Mark LaPedus in the
Semiconductor Business News had stirred up a lot of confusion and anger
in the wireless community and especially in the IEEE802.11 Working
Group. Late yesterday evening the same author has released an article
correcting some of the statements made earlier.
The JC-61 committee disagrees with the statements made by Mark LaPedus
in his article and it regrets that such incidents could lead to
misunderstanding and confusion.
The position of JC-61 is to develop interfaces between RF-BB and
PHY-MAC functions for 802.11 based systems. Clearly JC-61 sees this as
a complementary and supporting activity to the efforts in the
IEEE802.11 WG to set standards for WLANs. The IEEE802.11 WG is
recognized by JC-61 as the leading group to develop the specifications
of the WLAN standards. JC-61's work is naturally very closely related
to the standardization efforts in the IEEE802.11 WG, because it is
focusing on hardware implementations of these WLAN standards.
The statements made by any author do not necessarily are the ones made
by members of JC-61. JC-61 does not feel responsible for opinions and
statements made by others without the approval of the committee's
chair. Nevertheless we will work very closely with the chair of the
802.11 WG to clarify such statements, to do anything to correct them,
and to prevent them in the future.
The Chair of JC-61 will work with the BoD of JEDEC to agree on efforts
to prevent such incidents by clarifying the objectives and goals of the
JC-61 committee.
As a personal comment I would like to ask interested and participating
members to get not confused by such articles which are published NOT by
IEEE or JC-61. If you have any doubts do not hesitate to contact either
the JC-61 Chair Benno Ritter (benno.ritter@philips.com) or the
Vice-Chair Larry Arnett (arnett_larry@edg.mea.com) for clarification of
your questions.
Yours sincerely
Benno Ritter
Chair of JC-61 Committee
