I submitted your Contribution TR41-02-11-021 proposing to undertake work
on a
user premises equipment standard addressing criteria for the use of
VoIP
terminals over wireless LAN to the TIA Technical Committee
yesterday. After
some discussion, they agreed this work should go forward in TR-41.
As we
discussed in the TR-41 Plenary a couple of weeks ago, the most
appropriate place
for this work seems to be in Subcommittee TR-41.4.
I would like to request that you work with 41.4 chair Bob Bell to develop
a
specific project proprosal that can be put forward to the TR-41.4
membership at
the February meeting. The information in your contribution is a bit
broadly
stated and is more of a rational as to why the work should be done within
TR-41
than a specific statement describing the standard to be created.
You may want
to have a look at the form for opening a new project that is available on
the
TIA web site
(www.tiaonline.org).
Go to Standards > Procedures > Forms in the
drop down lists and then follow the link for the New Project Request
and
Authorization Form. This will show you the type of information that
is
required. However, you cannot actually submit this form until you
have reached
agreement on the project details in the February TR-41.4 meeting.

Shouldn't this be split into two discussions/efforts? They could
be:
#1 - the WLAN terminal and what it should (be able to) do, and
#2 - how the infrastructure should be specified to handle
this/these
type(s) of communications needs
If this seems appropriate, then clearly TR-41.4 should do option #2,
but
TR-41.3.4 handled terminals in the past (TIA-811), shouldn't that group
do
option #1?
Another question: Will this effort (either one encompassing or the
two
suggested above) deal with all possible WLAN Technologies (802.11a,
802.11b, 802.11g, Bluetooth, etc) or each in separate efforts? I
can see
reasons for both approaches, but as we're between meetings (and you
want
something produced by the next meeting) shouldn't there be a discussion
and
then a consensus on which approach is best/better from the list?
comments
cheers,
James

The former TR-41.3.4 working group has been re-designated TR-41.4..4
and
transferred from the TR-41.3 subcommittee to TR-41.4 in order to
centralize all
of the VoIP work in one place. Whether this project is actually
done in the
41.4 subcommittee as a whole, delegated to TR-41.4.4, or perhaps done in
a new
working group under 41.4 is a matter for the members and leadership of
41.4 to
decide.
As far as the scope of the project relative to different WLAN
technologies goes,
I agree we need to be specific. That is why I asked Francois and
Joachim to
make a specific proposal for the standards project to be discussed at
the
February TR-41.4 meeting. Again, the members of TR-41.4 need to
decide how
narrow or broad they want the scope to be in this regard. If a wide
scope is
chosen, there can also be a decision as to whether everything should
be
addressed in parallel, or if various aspects should be taken up in
series.
