RE: [802SEC] RE: Florida Tax on LANs

Title: Message
Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry I'm a bit slow on things these days, but life is a bit weird at work.

For the record, I favor staying in FL for the meeting (dispite the political issues) and keeping the same week as well.  I too have been planning around it.

Regarding the LAN Tax issues, is this something that should be taken  up in 802.18?  Seems to me it would impact wireless LAN as well as just LAN deplyments.  Clearly it is a regulatory issue (admittedly at the state level).

Regards,

Mat

I would also like to see what financial impact, if any, would accrue were we to
change the March venue from Orlando, since, as Geoff points out, the property
we were under contract with has gone bankrupt and closed ...

It was my understanding that we had not committed to any venue yet ...

Whoa Guys,  Let's not fly off the handle here !!!  This sounds way too iffy to start canceling meetings over because there are BIG financial impacts to the group to do that.

My request was to quantify the financial impact.
Also, since we have been undone from our March '04 venue by the closing of the hotel we are still at choice for our March '04 venue, aren't we?
Please provide us with that information.

However, it sounds like it might be an excellent time to organize an electronic letter writing campaign that everyone can easily participate in to indicate our sincere displeasure with such a notion and implying that the result of adoption of such as policy would certainly be cancellation of all future meetings there.

The article said:
To be sure, the proposal is very preliminary. By putting it down on paper, state rulemakers are hoping to hear from businesses and others on how it would affect them, says the Department of Revenue's Bruns.

"We're hoping we get a lot of attention paid to this and understand what impact would it have," he says.

We certainly should be able to assist them in making sure that they "hear from businesses and others on how it would affect them"

Bob-

Sounds good to me.

Should such discriminatory tax still be under consideration by the state of Florida when we convene in November, I would be happy to 2nd a motion to cancel scheduled 802 meetings in Florida and to send an appropriate advisory letter with copies to the Florida state chamber of commerce, the governor and the officers of the legislature.

Buzz, please advise of the financial implications.
(No, I do not want to spend March at DFW or in Albuquerque.)

BTW speaking of taxes, when I was in Ireland I was told by our landlady at a B&B that the Irish government taxes citizens 40 Euros/year for each credit card they hold.

When I saw this I though fantastic, an alternative to a mariachi band.  The seemingly obligatory mariachi band in Albuquerque is for me almost as bad as the hotel room challenges.

As long as I am dumping on meeting locations, please note the following relevant to March/Florida, how about an 802 led boycott of Florida?

The state of Florida is mulling a rule that could result in taxation of computer networks - both WAN and LAN.
The rule is taking businesses by surprise, according to a story in the Orlando Business Journal:
http://orlando.bizjournals.com/orlando/stories/2003/08/25/story1.html

The article says the state would tax networks 9.17%, and local districts could add their own tax to it. What exactly would be taxed? Either the lease payments or annual depreciation of network equipment, according to the article.

Dawn is the professional meeting planner who actually runs the plenaries. She is local.
Buzz is the Executive secretary of IEEE 802 and overseeing meeting arrangements is his job.

I'm not just sure how they divide up duties on planning for the entertainment at the social, but I suggest that you call Dawn as a first point of contact.

I hope to see you again soon,

Best regards,

Geoff
