Hello All, The plan has changed. The plan cited below had the following weaknesses: 1.
The IEEE would be making a press release about 802.11 without 802.11’s official approval 2.
Messaging to the press would be confused and distributed over 2 months 3.
It costs the IEEE money to do a press release. The new plan is as follows: 1.
July is our “internal” celebration
a.
Celebration event in plenary, cakes, giveaways
b.
Compilation video will be available
c.
Celebration graphics on 802.11 home page 2.
In July, 802.11 will consider a press release, and if approved, bring it to the EC for approval
a.
There will be a PUB SC meeting of 802.11 on Thursday of the session to do this. Stephen McCann, chair of the PUB SC will develop an initial draft with input from the IEEE marketing department.
b.
This draft will be circulated during or before the July session so that EC members can provide their input prior to WG approval.
i. Of course, that doesn’t preclude EC members from making comments on any vote to approve a press release, but I do hope that any substantive
input can be received when 802.11 is in a position to respond to it. 3.
September will be our “official” celebration
a.
it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the first meeting of the 802.11 study group anyway.
b.
IEEE marketing will target a date in Sept as the launch of its press campaign Best Regards, Adrian P STEPHENS Tel: +44 (1793) 404825 (office) ---------------------------------------------- From: Stephens, Adrian P
Dear EC, Just to give a heads-up on press releases related to the 802.11 25th anniversary. IEEE have written a press release “IEEE celebrates 802.11’s 25th anniversary”. This will not be put through WG or EC approval, as it is by the IEEE expressing an IEEE opinion, even though Jon and myself are quoted. 802.11 will create a more technical press release “802.11 reflects on 25 years of successful standards”. This will be approved by the WG and approval sought from the EC. It will be expressing an 802.11 opinion.
