[802SEC] +++Early Close 10-day EC Motion +++ Extension of IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group

All,

Our chair, Paul Nikolich has delegated the conduct of the EC electronic ballot on the following motion to me and approved the corresponding early close.

Background

At the IEEE 802 July 9 802 EC Opening Meeting, David Law, the 802.3 WG Chair, reviewed the status of the IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group (B400G).  Reference material is available at https://mentor.ieee.org/802-ec/dcn/21/ec-21-0159-00-00EC-ieee-802-3-ethernet-working-group-agenda-items-friday-9th-july-2021.pdf

Per Section 5.2 “Project Authorization” of the IEEE-SA Standards Board Operations Manual –

No formal activity shall take place after six months from the day of the first meeting of the Working Group or PAR Study Group without formal submittal of a PAR to the IEEE SA Standards Board and assignment of a project number, unless a single extension of six months for that activity is provided by the Standards Committee (see 5.1.2).

Working Group Vote

The IEEE 802.3 WG approved Requesting the extension of the IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group at its July 2021 Opening Meeting (12 Jul) with the following motion –

Motion

  • Move that the IEEE 802.3 Working Group request the extension of the IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group.
  • Results (802.3 Voters) (y/n/a): 125 / 0 / 1

Extension Justification

The B400G Study Group had its first meeting on Jan 14, 2021, and has been meeting regularly.  A list of all the sessions and meetings may be found at  https://www.ieee802.org/3/B400G/public/index.html.  Given the breadth of Ethernet the Study Group is still working on determining all of its project objectives, and needs additional time to finish this determination and to generate the proposed project documentation (PAR / CSD).  There has been significant participation in these meetings with attendance ranging from 100 to 200 individuals.

Motion

Grant 6 month extension of the IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group

Moved: John D’Ambrosia

Second: David Law

Start of ballot: 2021-07-12

Close of Ballot: Per early close rule

  • Paul Nikolich has agreed to an early close.
  • Early close: As required in subclause 4.1.2 'Voting rules' of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC) Operations Manual, this is notice that, to ensure the release is provided in a timely manner, this ballot may close early once sufficient responses are received to clearly decide a matter. Sufficient responses to clearly decide this matter will be based on the required majority for a motion under IEEE Bylaw I-300,4(5) (paragraph 2).

Regards,

John D'Ambrosia

Recording Secretary, IEEE 802 LMSC
