Ofcom has today given the green light for industry to harness the benefits of TV white spaces, an innovative new wireless technology.

‘White spaces’ are gaps in the radio spectrum in frequency bands, which can be used to offer new wireless applications to benefit consumers and businesses.

The white spaces covered by this statement are in frequencies currently used for digital terrestrial TV and wireless microphones, among other services, in the 470 MHz – 790 MHz spectrum band.

Ofcom is now putting in place the foundations for industry to use TV white spaces. To avoid harmful interference being caused to existing spectrum users, databases will apply rules, set by Ofcom, to put limits on the power levels at which these devices can operate.

Based on the trials and stakeholder feedback, there is considerable interest from industry in developing this technology. Ofcom also plans to explore whether the white space in other spectrum bands could be used for similar innovation in future.

A news release of the announcement can be viewed here.

Information on industry’s trials of TV white space devices can be viewed here.
