To those of us that braved eating â??hair powderâ?? in Nanjing, may be comforted that what we ate wasnâ??t quite so exotic. A friend saw the picture, and after laughing for a while, gave me the following explanation. The Chinese characters, when spoken out loud, sound like â??mo â?? finâ??. So the characters are a transliteration of the English word muffin. But the Chinese characters themselves translate back to English as â??hair powderâ??.
