stds-802-16: Chet Shirali [typo corrected]

Dear 802.16 Participants:

I regret to inform you of the death of Chet Shirali, a former 802.16
member. I learned of this yesterday in a note from Chet's wife, Deepa
Shirali.

Chet attended 15 sessions of the 802.16 Working Group and its
predecessor study group. His last 802.16 meeting was in May 2001. He
was an active participant in the development of the original IEEE Std
802.16 project as well as the followup 2-11 GHz work, co-authoring
many contributions.

I will draft a sympathy note to Deepa Shirali for review at the
Friday WG Closing Plenary meeting.

Roger

>Dear Roger,
>
>This is Chet's wife, Deepa Shirali, replying to your email. I am
>sorry to inform you that Chet passed away on June 28th from
>pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer in March 2002, and
>underwent surgery at Stanford in April 2002. After 6 weeks of chemo
>and radiation, he seemed to be recovering and had resumed normal
>activities. In November 2002, the cancer recurred and he was on
>chemo treatment for 6 months. In April 2003, a CT scan revealed the
>cancer had grown, an indication that the chemo had failed. He was
>under hospice care at home, and passed away peacefully three weeks
>later.
>
>We are still trying to cope with our loss. I was unable to access
>his email due to problems with the service provider. An IT person
>from my office helped me download all of Chet's email, hence the
>delay in replying to your email. You mention in your email that you
>had heard a rumor about Chet's illness. If you know of any one else
>who knew Chet, would you kindly inform them of his passing?
>
>Thank you very much.
>
>Regards,
>Deepa
