[STDS-802-16] IEEE 802.16 Update: Important News since Session #33 Report

Much has happened in the IEEE 802.16 world since the first edition of
the Session #33 Report. New content, flagged with the word "Update",
has now been added to the Report:
        http://ieee802.org/16/meetings/mtg33/report.html

A lot of the news if of great significance, and much of it is very
recent, so please have a look. Here is a synopsis:

*IEEE Standard 802.16-2004 ("IEEE Standard for Local and metropolitan
area networks Part 16: Air Interface for Fixed Broadband Wireless
Access System") was published on 1 October 2004. This standard, which
was approved on 24 June based on the draft entitled
"P802.16-REVd/D5", is a revision of IEEE Standard 802.16-2001 (as
amended by IEEE Standard 802.16c-2002,and IEEE Standard
802.16a-2003). The three previous volumes are superceded by the new
one. It may be ordered from IEEE; see the new "IEEE 802.16 Published
Standards and Drafts" page:
        http://ieee802.org/16/published.html
The standard will be included on the annual IEEE 802 CD-ROM, to be
distributed during Session #34.

*The IEEE-SA Standards Board approved a modified project
authorization (PAR) providing more flexibility for the P802.16e
project, which has been developing mobility specifications for the
802.16 air interface. The new PAR
        http://ieee802.org/16/docs/04/80216-04_34r4.pdf
was approved on 23 September. The discussion involved the
consideration of a statement from the Working Group and Task Group
Chairs:
        http://ieee802.org/16/docs/04/80216-04_60.pdf
as well as a set of supportive statements from industry:

*On the P802.16e (mobile) project, Draft 5 completed the final round
of its Working Group Letter Ballot, with an approval ratio of 100%:
        http://ieee802.org/16/tge/ballot14/report14.html
This provided final Working Group approval to forward the draft for
IEEE Sponsor Ballot.

*The IEEE 802 Executive Committee approved (with 11 Approve and 4 not
voting publicly, as of the 4 October deadline) a motion to forward
the P802.16e draft for IEEE Sponsor Ballot, conditional upon
successful completion of the Working Group confirmation ballot. The
conditions were met, as the confirmation ballot concluded
successfully. IEEE Sponsor Ballot is expected to run from 5 October
through 5 November, with comments to be considered at Session #34 in
November. The schedule, which anticipates completion of the project
in late 2004, remains on track.

*P802.16f/D1, the first draft of the of MIB project in the Network
Management Task Group, was released on 30 September. Working Group
Letter Ballot #16, to review that draft, runs 1 October - 1 November:
        http://ieee802.org/16/netman/ballot16/report16.html

*The Network Management Task Group issued a Call for Contributions
concerning the P802.16g project:
        http://ieee802.org/16/netman/docs/80216g-04_02.pdf

*The IEEE-SA Standards Board approved a PAR creating a corrigendum
project "P802.16-2004/Cor 1" for maintenance of IEEE Standard 802.16:
        http://ieee802.org/16/docs/04/80216-04_41r2.pdf
The Maintenance Task Group issued a Call for Comments on the topic:
        http://ieee802.org/16/maint/docs/80216maint-04_06.pdf

*Working Group Letter Ballot #15:
        http://ieee802.org/16/le/ballot15/report15.html
concluded with approval, pending comment resolution, of a motion to
forward a PAR for license-exempt coexistence. A Call for Reply
Comments was issued:
        http://ieee802.org/16/arc/802-16list2/msg02233.html
with a deadline of 6 October.

*IEEE Standard 802.16.2-2004 ("IEEE Recommended Practice for Local
and metropolitan area networks- Coexistence of Fixed Broadband
Wireless Access Systems") entered the Get IEEE 802 program, where it
is now available for free download:
        http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/802.16.html

*The Conformance Task Group issued its minutes:
        http://ieee802.org/16/tgc/docs/80216C-04_02.pdf
The P802.16/Conformance04 working document is expected soon, for comments.

*The attendance at IEEE 802.16 Session #33:
        http://ieee802.org/16/meetings/mtg33/report.html
was revised upward to a new 802.16 interim-session record of 287.

*The Working Group minutes from Session #33 are posted:
        http://ieee802.org/16/docs/04/80216-04_59.pdf

*Preregistration for IEEE 802.16 Session #34:
        http://ieee802.org/16/meetings/mtg34
ends on 29 October. Hotel reservations should be made immediately, as
space is quite limited.

*About the "802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") exists solely to
distribute major announcements related to the IEEE 802.16 Working
Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but
not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working
Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be
rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major
news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to
the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants,
need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be
redundant.
