I have looked at the
new usage models and I think
there may be one scenario
missing. It arises as follows: There may be an area outside a BS coverage
area (e.g., a small village outside a town) where it is uneconomical to deploy a BS because of the low amount of
traffic in this area. Conventionally, this problem is solved with an analogue repeater, designed to extend the
BS range or bypass an obstruction (e.g., a hill)
in order to provide coverage for this village. We may then expect similar coverage in
the village to that in the
town. To improve this level of coverage in the town (e.g., for higher rate services) we may deploy multihop relays. So we would similarly expect to
deploy multihop relays in the village in order to
provide similar services. But
in this case the multihop
relays would connect via the
analogue repeater to the base station, rather than directly to the
base station. Although we could replace the analogue repeater with a multihop relay to avoid this scenario, it
may not always be the best option and so for the moment I would like to suggest that it should be
included in the usage models.
