[RPRWG] RPR Perf: Soliciting input on simulation framework

All,

As per the summary presentation that I gave in Portland, the Performance Committee asked me (as the Chair) to put together a draft document describing the simulation framework for PHASE II that would include the ideas that we have been discussing in the committee meetings, and any others that we see suitable and appropriate. The plan is for me to do so, and then send it out for comments. I'll be tapping into the expertise of several of you for various specific areas where input would be appreciated.

As I work on pulling this together, I'd like to solicit and encourage any input from the committee participants (and others). If you have any thoughts or ideas that you would like to be considered and potentially added in, please send them to me. Feel free to post on it on the reflector if you feel it to be appropriate.

We're looking into establishing the framework (scenarios, metrics, parameters) for the following items:
  • TCP and UDP traffic (and appropriate mixes) - which will be an optional item per discussions we had in the committee
  • Classes of Service (CoS)
    • Number of classes (based on the discussions we had, the top candidate now is to have three classes)
    • Traffic percentages of each class
  • Protection schemes
  • More irregular traffic distributions that demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of various architectural ideas
  • Committed information rates
  • Transients
  • Clear and precise definition of:
    • Output format
    • Metrics
      • Where the measurements are taken
  • Methods for isolating architectural features instead of full implementations (if possible)
  • Use of confidence intervals
  • Characterizing traffic distributions (self-similar traffic, Poisson, on/off sources, and potentially other bursty sources)
  • Others?
Any input is welcome.
Thanks.
