Re: [802.3_100GNGOPTX] Call for Presentations - July Plenary Meeting Information (Clarification on Priority)

Note my inclusion of particular parts of the industry in the example for breadth of support was not intended to exclude any relevant portion of the industry. If, by chance, I excluded any part of the industry in my example, it was unintentional. Please expand that example as widely as you feel appropriate when developing your breadth of support.

Dear Task Force Participants, (and specifically, those who are planning  presentations)

Looking at the number of comments received, the time required to address them, and the time available to consider presentations related adoption of a >500m SMF Baseline (per Motion 15, Victoria) we are anticipating that a means for prioritization of presentations is going to be necessary.

If you review my first call for presentations, it should be clear that there was going to be limited time and a need to collaborate and consolidate the key materials necessary to persuade the Task Force on your particular proposal.

We have already started receiving presentation requests for individual presentations lacking broad support. We are trying to advise people that such presentations are going to take a lower priority than presentations that have broad support. Prioritization will be made based on two criteria.
  1. Number of supporters
  2. Breadth of industry support (cabling, chip, optics, system, end-user)
Hopefully, there is clear distinction so we can prioritize with indisputable fairness, but it is very likely we will not have time to present all submissions. Please take this as an opportunity to develop your broad list of industry support.

Final Reminder - Requests must be submitted before July 5th

Dear Task Force Participants,

The IEEE P802.3bm Task Force will be meeting at the upcoming IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting in Geneva, CH on Tuesday July 16th through Thursday July 18th, 2013. I anticipate full days on Tuesday and Wednesday and also meeting Thursday morning. Registration and meeting details may be found at http://www.ieee802.org/3/interims/index.html.  You are strongly encouraged to register and make your reservations as soon as possible.

As you are aware, we have moved Draft 1.0 to Task Force review and we anticipate a significant part of our meeting time will be dedicated to comment resolution. Per motion #15 in Victoria, the SMF ad hoc has continued to address a possible baseline proposal for inclusion in July, however, our time for consideration of this proposal will be limited.

It is strongly recommended that baseline proponents carefully consider what material will be necessary to achieve broad consensus and incorporate new material that will help persuade the Task Force to adopt their proposals rather than repeat material that has already been presented. Repetitive material will be rejected.

Please note if you are intending to give a presentation in support of a suggested remedy (or provide any supplemental material) for any comments, please indicate this in the “Suggested Remedy” field in your comment submission.  Please note that formal requests for presentation time must still be made to the Chair.  Presentations related to comment resolution should be kept to less than 20 minutes in duration, excluding time for questions and answers.  Requests for presentation time greater than 20 minutes will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and the requester should contact the chair prior to making the request to justify the additional time.

Requests for presentation time must be made before the second Friday preceding the meeting.  For the
upcoming meeting, requests for presentation time shall be made to me at dan_dove@xxxxxxxx  and must be made by midnight AOE on July 5th, 2013

The presenter shall e-mail a PDF, soft-copy version of the presentation to me at dan_dove@xxxxxxxx by Tuesday of the week preceding the meeting.  For the
upcoming meeting, presentations must be submitted by midnight AOE on July 9th, 2013.  Please copy our vice-chair, Kapil Shrikhande <kapils@xxxxxxxx>  on your requests and presentation submittal.

Please make sure that all requests for presentations or submissions of presentation material have no restrictive notices at the bottom of the email.  All such emails will be refused and requests / presentations will not be acknowledged.

For your presentation request, please include the following;

Title of Presentation
Abstract
Time Requested
Presenter, Affiliation
Co-Author(s), Affiliation(s)

We would greatly appreciate presenters reviewing their own presentations to verify that they have followed the cited Presentation Style Guidelines. If there are questions related to relative cost discussion, please see the presentation by IEEE counsel at http://www.ieee802.org/3/100GNGOPTX/public/may12/lindsay_01_0512_optx.pdf and contact me if there are additional questions.

Also, to support the web site search tool used by the IEEE P802.3 web site the 'Document Information' fields of the PDF file must be completed as follows:

Filename: presentername_nn_mmyy_optx.pdf
Title: Title of presentation
Author: Name(s) of author(s)
Subject: IEEE P802.3bm
40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Fiber Optic Task Force

As a reminder to the group, we are a contribution driven organization.   It should not be assumed by anyone that work will just get done without contributions to drive it.  Areas not moving forward will be brought to the attention of the Task Force for consideration on how to address.

See you in Geneva.

Best Regards,
