Re: [8023-10GEPON] [PMD Naming Conventions] Proposal for Simplex PMD Names

Dear Tatsuta-san,
As for the C1. I agree with You that the 30 is going to be recognized as 30 km system, thus leading to confusion. We will have to come up with the other naming system eventually - do You have any proposals? It seems that for now either we get stuck with -30 or -20+ or something even more creative ...
As for Q1. You are right - they are used to indicate the location (OLT and ONU respectively) rather than upstream and downstream channels. I am not sure of the reason for such a nomenclature but it would be more useful (or more logical at least) to use U for upstream channel (ONU Tx and OLT Rx) and D for downstream (OLT Tx and ONU Rx) ... What do You think about it? The downside is that it is not compatible with the 802.3ah specs and we would have to provide some naming conversion table, thus potentially leading to confusion ... I am not sure what is best - stick with the accepted naming or try to "correct" it ...

Best regards

Dear Duane,

Thank you for your excellent work.
Could I give you one comment and one question?

C1. I do not oppose to use a word "30", but I do not think "30" means 30km.
As I sometimes mentioned in the IEEE meeting, 29dB CHIL is necessary for a
real ODN even if it is 10 or 20km length.

Q1. I think PX10/20-D and PX10/20-U are not used to mention Downstream and
Upstream in 1G-EPON (IEEE802.3ah).
The "-D" is used for OLT transmitter and receiver, and the "-U" is used for
ONU transmitter and receiver.
Do you know the reason?

Sincerely yours,
Tsutomu TATSUTA
