[10GMMF] Reminder for TP2 call 2/3/05

Sorry about the late reminder.
  • Date: Thurs, Feb 3,05 (regular day/time)
  • Time: 9:00 AM Pacific
  • Duration: 1:30 max
  • Number: 401-694-1515
  • Access code: 421721#
For the call, I'd like to brainstorm a list of topics (a starting list is below) that require work, and determine how/when we want to tackle them.
  • TWDP test pattern (from AnAi or BnBi)
  • Scope noise and jitter compensation method/sentences
  • Clock recovery/tracking
    • During uncorrelated jitter test?
    • During TWDP test?
  • RIN
    • Should the Rx be running during the test? (Such words are in the new jitter test.)
    • Allow AC coupling during RIN? (Reduce noises that would be normally filtered by AC coupling.)
  • MATLAB code review
  • More TP2 waveforms - do we have the right TWDP and TP3 values? Other response shapes?
  • Rx overload (driven by TP3 folks?)
  • Others?

Subject: [10GMMF] Notes for TP2 call 1/20/05

Attendees
  • Nick Weiner
  • Ben Wilcocks
  • John Ewen
  • John Jaeger
  • Sudeep Bhoja
  • Jan Peeters Weem
  • Piers Dawe
  • Martin Lobel
  • Tom Lindsay
  • Norm Swenson
  • Lew Aronson
  • Others I missed or did not ID?
Agenda discussed and approved (see below) with addition of an introduction to the concept of pre-emphasis by Lew Aronson.
Previous minutes/notes from 1/13 approved

Technical progress
  • Objective - resolve as many details as possible by/before the Vancouver meeting Jan '05.
  • TWDP simulation tool
    • Status
      • Norm has sent MATLAB code for review to those who requested it. If others are interested in reviewing the code, contact Norm Swenson.
      • Some discussions have occurred, mostly asking clarifications; no suggested changes.
      • Comments in code are helpful but could be trimmed for standard. Group agreed to keep as is and trim later if needed.
      • Tom submitted a short presentation to support comment 110. Comment 110 is to adopt the code into the next draft.
    • Presentation - see http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/aq/public/upload/UpdatedcomparisonofMATLABcodewithPIE-D.pdf by Tom.
      • Comparison to PIE-D
        • Updated comparison to John Ewen's PIE-D results across 108 fibers showed excellent agreement to within ~0.02 dB, typically much better.
        • Small differences can be due to many things, such as round off errors. Norm says semi-analytic (IEEE code) and Gaussian (PIE-D calculation) methods may also produce slightly different results.
        • For PIE-D equations, see bhoja_1_0704.
      • Filter configurations
        • Updated comparison of filter configurations. Shows deterministic difference.
        • Approach where noise goes through Bessel-Thomson filter reduces penalty to 0.17 dB better than PIE-D.
        • Tom recommended to stick with current definition of PIE-D.
        • Jan asked about sensitivity of results due to variations in scope filters. Several answered they expect the errors to be small.
  • Transmitter pre-emphasis
    • Lew plans to present the concept and preliminary results in Vancouver.
    • Initial conceptual work with electrical waveforms shows potential significant boost to budget may be possible. Hoping for more experimental evidence in optical domain. Also needs analysis with shorter equalizers.
    • Must be compatible with short links too (Rx peak overload and jitter concern).
    • Who owns budget? Appears that no smaller group owns it. Most everyone in 802.3aq has some stake in it.
  • Pattern definition
    • Not discussed. Little progress since last call. Actions can be found in previous meeting notes.
  • D1.0 comments
    • Continued work on comments relating to TP2.
    • New question - should RIN test require duplex traffic to account for Rx to Tx crosstalk?
    • A separate email will publish the recommendations from the ad hoc group.
