RE: Patch cord for 1300 WWDM




Dear Eric,

I never disputed that the 850 nm CWDM PMD could achieve 300 meters
on the new multimode fiber.  What I am questioning, and what (I
think) Paul is trying to answer, is Bill Wiedemann's claim that it
could achieve greater than 550 meters on this fiber, or more precisely,
that it could do this and simultaneously achieve 100 meters on the
62.5 um installed base of MMF.  I think that the reflector traffic
makes this pretty clear.

By the way, please do not put words in my mouth.  I never "indicated"
that "850 nm CWDM has a lower cost than the 1300 nm WWDM".  I simply said
that the CLAIM that it has a lower cost (which has been made by the
850 nm CWDM advocates - not by me) was based primarily on the argument
that it has looser alignment tolerances.  This does not imply that I
agree either that it is lower cost, that it has looser alignment 
tolerances, or that IF it has looser alignment tolerances that it 
necessarily follows from that that its cost is lower.
