There are several reasons for the difference in price between SX & LX
modules. Economy of scale is the most obvious difference, as you suggest.
Additionally, you have the labor difference between a smf alignment and one
for mmf and the cost differential between a smf oriented OSA (machined
stainless steel with a ceramic fiber stub ferrule assembly) vs a plastic
housing with integrated plastic ferrule. The laser costs differences pale
by comparison.
