Dear >400GbE Study Group Participants, I had a conversation with our very capable SG Chair, Mr. John D’Ambrosia, about what was the actionable take away point from my presentation for the SG.
The best way to summarize it is to point at the 5 Criteria Adopted by HSSG (802.3ba TF precursor) and approved by 802.3 at July 2007 Plenary. These have stood the test of time, and we would should use them as examples of how to accurately
describe market needs and state of technology. Broad Market Potential excerpt: Prior experience scaling IEEE 802.3 and contributions to the study group indicates:
·
40 Gb/s Ethernet will provide approximately the same cost balance between the LAN and the attached stations as 10 Gb/s Ethernet.
·
The cost distribution between routers, switches, and the infrastructure remains acceptably balanced for 100 Gb/s Ethernet. Given the topologies of the networks and intended applications, early deployment will be driven by key aggregation & high-bandwidth interconnect points. This is unlike the higher volume end system application typical
for 10/100/1000 Mb/s Ethernet, and as such, the initial volumes for 100 Gb/s Ethernet are anticipated to be more modest than the lower speeds. This does not imply a reduction in the need or value of 100 Gb/s Ethernet to address the stated applications. Technical Feasibility excerpt: The proposed project will build on the array of Ethernet component and system design experience, and the broad knowledge base of Ethernet network operation.
Thank you Chris From: Chris Cole Dear >400GbE Study Group Participants, We ran out of time during my presentation slot to give everyone an opportunity to ask questions and make comments.
In his presentation, Ali Ghiasi pointed out that 800GbE standards work started in the Ethernet Technology Consortium (ETC) before the start of the >400GbE SG. Brad Booth, ETC Chair, and Rob Stone, ETC Technical WG Chair, informed me that
this started in 2019. So my predictions are crumbling before the ink is dry on the presentation, and the 800GbE table entries need the below update.
As Brad cautioned us on the call, and Cedric did similarly after the call, predictions based on the past should be taken with a grain of salt as new trends and dependencies are rapidly developing. I will redouble my efforts and more carefully
study the crystal color energy wheel to find a more reliable color. Chris From: John D'Ambrosia <jdambrosia@xxxxxxxxx>
