Dear 802.3dj TF Participants,
During our deliberations, we deal with a large number of complex issues with many considerations and diverse perspectives. This involves lengthy deep dives into technical details, which sometimes leads to missing major disconnects with implications far beyond
the issue at hand. It's important to correct these, separate from the specifics.
During the discussion of TFT (transmitter functional test) last Thursday, 9/10/26, it was asserted by a commenter that optical power into a receiver, as well as its suitable adjustment, is irrelevant to TFT results.
During the discussion of Rise/Fall time today, it was asserted by the same commenter that bandwidth doesn't matter much to interoperability.
These are major disconnects which require stepping back and reminding ourselves about fundamentals. The most important equation in communications, which is the basis for everything we do in 802.3 electrical and optical physical layer tracks, is Shannon-Hartley
Theorem, repeated here for convenience.
C = B log2(1 + S/N)
In the equation, B is bandwidth, and S is optical power.
Therefore to assert that bandwidth or optical power don't matter or are irrelevent to optical communications, respectively, is to misunderstand fundamentals.
We can at least take solace from the glass being 1/3 full, as N (noise) was not asserted to be irrelevant.
Thank you
Chris
