[802.3_ISAAC] suggestion on PHY objective

Following up on the discussion we had today,

I think we can separate the issue of commonality out, and resolve it later – if needed.

If we do that, I suggest the following on the objective, based on Kirsten, Kamal, and Ragnar’s text.

The summary is: separate out the “define performance of link segments…” from the “define an electrical phy”. Then make two phy objectives – one for balanced one for unbalanced media.

This leaves us with 3 objectives to adopt:

  • Define performance characteristics of link segments suitable for use with automotive balanced-pair and automotive unbalanced coaxial cables supporting use of up to 2 inline connectors and up to at least 15m reach on at least one type of automotive cabling.

  • Define an electrical PHY to support up to 10 Gbps point-to-point operation in one direction and up to 100 Mb/s point-to-point operation in the other direction over the defined balanced link segment.

  • Define an electrical PHY to support up to 10 Gbps point-to-point operation in one direction and up to 100 Mb/s point-to-point operation in the other direction over the defined unbalanced link segment.

We can then add 5 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps objectives, either with the same link segments or with different link segments.  If we use different link segments we will need to refer to them by some name.

We can figure out later whether there is an objective to capture commonality in the PHY sublayers.
