[802.3_NGECDC] NG-ECDC at Nov 2016 Plenary

Dear  Ad Hoc Participants

There are two specific activities for the upcoming Nov Plenary –

1.       Proposed change to the ICAID to broaden the scope to the ad hoc to “New Ethernet Applications.”

The draft version of the proposed changes to the ICAID may be found at - http://www.ieee802.org/3/ad_hoc/ngrates/public/16_09/ICAID_16_0902_draft.pdf

(Thanks to David Law for generating a marked up version - https://mentor.ieee.org/802-ec/dcn/16/ec-16-0156-00-00EC-ieee-802-3-ng-ecdc-industry-connections-activity-modified-icaid.pdf)

If you would like to support this, and had not indicated your interest previously, please email me with your contact info.

2.       As announced, there will be a single session on Extended Reach Optics for higher speeds on Monday night from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

The group has had ongoing discussions regarding a potential CFI.  We have had data presented on broad market potential, which has led to reach discussions, as well as debating speeds (50G/200G/400G).

There have also been technical presentations that have either proposed potential technologies to consider, or demonstrated technical feasibility, such as http://www.ieee802.org/3/ad_hoc/ngrates/public/16_07/booth_ecdc_01_0716.pdf.  These presentations have led to conversations about PAM-4, FEC, coherent, and “coherent-lite.”

To help this effort move forward, my plan is it work on a deck using the material  presented to date, and put it in the form of a strawman deck for a CFI.  We can then review the totality of what we have and see where we have agreement and to see where we need additional information or data, and determine our level of consensus on moving forward.

My initial thoughts are to look at this as an Extended Optical Reach project, targeting 40km and potentially beyond.  If you have any thoughts or feedback, please feel free to contact me or start a discussion on the reflector.

Regards,
