Subject: [STDS-802-3] November plenary meeting announcement

TO: IEEE 802.3 Voters, Observers and Liaisons

Dear Colleagues:

IEEE 802.3 will meet Monday 10th November through Thursday 13th November
in Dallas, TX, USA. All IEEE 802.3 meetings are scheduled for the Hyatt
Regency Dallas at Reunion in Dallas. The deadline for the early
registration discount is fast approaching (Saturday, October 25, 2008, 1AM
UTC). As always, the IEEE 802 LMSC session announcement, registration and
current hotel availability information can be found through the 'Next IEEE
802 Plenary session notice' link on our home web page [ www.ieee802.org/3
]. To receive email updates and reminders for the plenary sessions,
subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector [ http://listserv.ieee.org ].

The opening IEEE 802.3 working group (WG) meeting will begin at 1:00 PM on
Monday 10th November, and the closing IEEE 802.3 WG meeting will be 1:00
PM on Thursday 13th November. Task Force (TF) and Study Group (SG)
meetings will follow our typical schedule also found on our web site [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/plenary.html ]. The agenda will be approved at
the meeting, the draft agenda is available in the minutes area [
http://ieee802.org/3/minutes/nov08/ ] and will be updated as required
prior to the meeting. As usual, TF, standing committee and any appropriate
ad hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing IEEE
802.3 meetings.

The IEEE-SA has supported the development of an electronic meeting
attendance tracking tool (formerly known as IMAT). At this session, and
moving forward, we will gather only two records of attendance, the
attendance tool and attendance books in each meeting. The attendance tool
will be the only official record of attendance for building and
maintaining Working Group membership. The meeting attendance books will be
very similar to the old IEEE 802.3 attendance books, there will however be
one copy specific to each meeting. The contents of these books will be
recorded in the minutes for each meeting and it is important that you
review these minutes to make sure your attendance is recorded correctly as
this will be the backup should there be an issue with the attendance tool.

As usual, attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at three
of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how long a
particular TF or SG might be meeting. The attendance system will only
allow sign in on Monday at the opening IEEE 802.3 plenary and on Thursday
at the closing IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting (not during the Thursday morning
meetings).

The IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet Task Force will also be
holding an adjacent, co-located interim session on Sunday 9th November
from 1PM to 9PM and on Monday 10th November 10 from 8AM to 10AM [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/interims/index.html ]. Since this session is
adjunct to, and co-located with, the plenary meeting, attendance at these
meetings cannot be used to count towards establishing nor retaining voting
rights.

A number of WG decisions are expected during the IEEE 802.3 meetings (most
on Thursday). Depending on the amount of discussion, and though not
expected at this time, the Thursday meeting may run beyond our target 5:30
PM ending time. Additional subgroup information follows. Contact
information for contacting task force and study group chairs, and archival
project information can be found on our web site: [ www.ieee802.org/3 ].

I look forward to seeing you in Dallas.

Chair, IEEE 802.3 Working Group

IEEE 802.3 Business (Mon & Thu)
===============================

Working Group Home page: http://www.ieee802.org/3/index.html

In addition to regular Working Group business, there will be Task Force
business based on the status below.

IEEE P802.3ar Task Force - Congestion Management (No meetings)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Task Force Home page: http://www.ieee802.org/3/ar/index.html

The IEEE P802.3ar Task Force remains in a stalemate condition that has not
been resolved. The consensus in March [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/minutes/mar08/0308_ar_close_report.pdf ] was to
leave the project on the administrative withdrawal list and that any
future meetings will be called only if WG Chair determines it is
justified. There has been no change in status or any new developments
therefore there will be no Task Force meeting.

IEEE P802.3at Task Force - DTE Power Enhancements (Tue-Thu)
-----------------------------------------------------------

Task Force Home page: http://www.ieee802.org/3/at/index.html

The IEEE P802.3at Task Force is working on developing its draft amendment
to IEEE Std 802.3. The IEEE P802.3at Task Force expects to be in comment
resolution on comments received on the second recirculation ballot of IEEE
P802.3at draft D3.2.

The IEEE P802.3at Task Force will also request the WG request approval of
a PAR modification request and a Distinct Identity five criteria response
change at the November plenary. The PAR modification request is to update
the IEEE P802.3at amendment to be contingent on the IEEE P802.3bc
amendment. IEEE P802.3at is the first project scheduled to add to the IEEE
802.3 Organizationally Specific TLVs which are being transferred from IEEE
Std 802.1AB to IEEE Std 802.3 by the IEEE P802.3bc project (see below).
Draft IEEE P802.3at PAR modification request: [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/at/802d3at_modified_PAR.pdf ]. The Distinct
Identity change updates the maximum power that can be supplied to the PD
to what has been found to be appropriate during the development of the
project. Draft IEEE P802.3at Distinct Identity change - [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/at/802d3at_distinct_identity_change.pdf ].

Questions about the Task Force meetings can be addressed to the IEEE
P802.3at Task Force Chair, Mr. Mike McCormack.

IEEE P802.3av Task Force - 10 Gb/s EPON (Tue-Thu)
-------------------------------------------------

Task Force Home page: http://www.ieee802.org/3/av/index.html

Maintenance, IEEE 802.3.1, IEEE 802.3bb, IEEE P802.3bc Task Force - (Wed)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Task Force Home page: http://www.ieee802.org/3/maint/index.html

The IEEE P802.3 Maintenance Task Force also expects to request the WG to
request approval of three PARs at the November plenary. These are: IEEE
P802.3.1 Standard for Management Information Base (MIB) definitions for
Ethernet, IEEE P802.3-2008/Cor 1 (IEEE 802.3bb) Corrigendum 1 Timing
considerations for PAUSE operation and IEEE P802.3bc Amendment: Ethernet
Organizationally Specific type, length, values (TLVs).

The IETF formerly created and published Ethernet SNMP MIB module
specifications. The IETF decided some time ago to not create or publish
any future updates to these MIB modules. The IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working
Group has decided to take on this task. The IEEE P802.3.1 Standard for
Management Information Base (MIB) definitions for Ethernet will include
the MIB modules formerly produced and published by the IETF, as well as
extensions resulting from recent amendments to IEEE Std 802.3. Draft IEEE
P802.3.1 PAR [ http://www.ieee802.org/3/maint/public/par_draft_p80231.pdf
], draft IEEE P802.3.1 five criteria response. [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/maint/public/frazier_2_0908.pdf ].

The IEEE P802.3-2008/Cor 1 (IEEE 802.3bb) Corrigendum is to correct the
PAUSE reaction delay value specified in IEEE Std 802.3 so that it is
sufficient for the delay of newer IEEE Std 802.3 PHY types. Draft IEEE
P802.3-2008/Cor 1 (IEEE 802.3bb) PAR [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/maint/public/par_draft_p8023bb.pdf ].

The IEEE 802.3 Organizationally Specific TLVs are currently specified in
IEEE Std 802.1AB. The IEEE P802.3bc Ethernet Organizationally Specific
type, length, values (TLVs) amendment will be limited to the transfer of
these TLVs from IEEE Std 802.1AB to IEEE Std 802.3. The development of
future IEEE 802.3 Organizationally Specific TLVs will be done by amendment
projects of the IEEE 802.3 standard. Draft IEEE P802.3bc PAR [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/maint/public/par_draft_p8023bc.pdf ].

Questions about maintenance activities can be addressed to IEEE 802.3
Maintenance Task Force Chair, Mr. Wael Diab.
