Abstract

The Global Grid Forum (GGF) is progressing specification on the
services, architecture, infrastructure and functional building blocks that will be used in grid computer networks. It is generally accepted that the sites composing a grid network will be nterconnected using Optical Ethernet, with various types of dial in (including 802.11 WiFi) access from remote users.

The Grid Security work has been predicated on an underlying Web
Services architecture and SOAP/XML infrastructure. However, not all grid applications will be based on Web Services, and many will not use SOAP/XML encoded messages. This leaves a huge gap in the GGF Security work.

The first presentation is an overview of the OGSA-SEC WG. This WG is now in sleep mode, waiting for WS Security work to be standardized. The IEEE 802.1 LinkSec activity could be a trigger to reactivate that WG, based on creating secure LAN/MAN links that could support Web Services or other types of applications/ services.

The second presentation- on the OGSA-AuthZ WG is submitted under the
assumption that either IEEE 802.1X (or Link Sec)should be referenced as a potential "authentication mechanism" by OGSA Auth WG. We note that IEEE 802.1x is standardized and already in wide use.
