IEEE 802.16 Session #35 Report

Summary
Session #35 of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access took place on 24-27 January 2005 in Sanya, Hainan, China. The session was hosted by Lucy Chen and Katherine Woo of corporate host Huawei Technologies Co. The attendance of 313 set a record for an interim session of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group.

Comment Resolution on Mobile WirelessMAN® (P802.16e) Draft
Task Group e resolved comments in preparation for the development of IEEE P802.16e Draft 6. Following the meeting of an editorial committee on 8-10 February, the package will be distributed for IEEE-SA Sponsor Ballot recirculation. The schedule for the project, which will enhance the WirelessMAN® air interface to support mobile as well as fixed users, was revised, and completion is now expected before mid-year of 2005. Task Group e issued a closing report and minutes.

Update: A Sponsor Ballot Recirculation was issued on the new draft P802.16e/D6, with a deadline of 9 March.

Network Management Task Group Activities
The IEEE 802.16 Network Management (NetMan) Task Group made progress on its two projects. Comments on the second P802.16f draft (the Management Information Base [MIB] for fixed operation), received in Working Group Recirculation Ballot #16a, were resolved, and the Working Group agreed to seek approval to forward Draft 3 for Sponsor Ballot. Regarding the P802.16g Baseline Document, comment resolution will lead to a new version P802.16g-04/03r1 that will be subjected to a further Call for Comments. The NetMan Task Group issued a closing report and minutes.

Update: Recirculation Ballot #16b began on the P802.16f/D3 draft, with a deadline of 4 March.
Update: A Call for Comments, with an 11 March deadline, was issued on the updated Working Document P802.16g-04/03r1.

Maintenance Task Group Activities
The Working Group's Maintenance Task Group continued addressing comments relevant to developing its draft of a Corrigendum to IEEE Standard 802.16-2004. The Working Group agreed to create a draft based on Task Group decisions and to open Working Group Letter Ballot #17 regarding that draft. The Maintenance Task Group issued a closing report and minutes.

Update: Working Group Letter Ballot #17 began on the new P802.16-2004/Cor1/D1 draft, with a deadline of 13 March.

Conformance Task Group Activities
The Conformance Task Group, addressing the P802.16/Conformance04 project on PICS Proforma for frequencies below 11 GHz, did not receive additional contributions or comments. A closing report and minutes were issued. A new Call for Comments will follow.

New IEEE 802.16 Licensed-Exempt Task Group
The Working Group's Licensed-Exempt Task Group held its first meeting following the approval of PAR P802.16h on 8 December. A closing report and minutes were issued.

Liaison Activities

José Costa, the WG's liaison to ITU-R, prepared a report of the ad hoc group on ITU-R liaisons during Session #35. The group discussed a joint 802.16/ETSI BRAN document for ITU-R WP 9B as a followup to an earlier contribution. Earlier in January, IEEE had submitted an IEEE Contribution to ITU-R JTG 6-8-9 that has been prepared by the 802.16 WG.
Mariana Goldhamer, the WG's liaison to ETSI BRAN, presented an ETSI BRAN Update. The WG responded with a llaison letter to ETSI BRAN.
The WG sent a letter to Technical Committee TC5 of the China Communication Standards Association (CCSA) in response to a letter from CCSA TC5. A communication to IEEE 802 from CCSA referred to IEEE 802.16 and Session #35. A communication from the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry to IEEE 802, in response to a letter from IEEE 802, agreed to a meeting with the IEEE 802 China Liaison Official that was held alongside Session #35.
Panyuh Joo, liaison from TTA PG302, presented a TTG PG302 status report. The WG responded with a liaison letter to TTA PG302.
The WG received a liaison statement from 3GPP2 TSG-S and responded with a reply to 3GPP2 TSG-S.

Future Meetings

IEEE 802.16's Session #36 will take place on 14-17 March 2005 in Atlanta, GA, USA in conjunction with the IEEE 802 Plenary Session. Registration and hotel reservations are currently being accepted.
IEEE 802.16's Session #37 will take place on 2-5 May 2005 in Sorrento, Italy. The Member Host is Giulio Cavalli of corporate host Siemens Communications. Hotel reservations are currently being accepted.
IEEE 802.16's Session #38 will take place on 18-21 July 2005 in San Francisco, CA, USA in conjunction with the IEEE 802 Plenary Session.
IEEE 802.16's Session #39 will take place on 12-15 September 2005 in Taipei. The session will be supported by Member Hosts Arthur Wang and Stanley Wang. The institutional host is ITRI and the co-host is CyberTAN Technology.
IEEE 802.16's Session #40 will take place on 14-17 November 2005 in Vancouver, BC, Canada in conjunction with the IEEE 802 Plenary Session.

Documents
The Session #35 document list includes references to several hundred session documents.

Working Group Membership
The Working Group Membership remains at 220. 126 Potential Members are eligible for membership by attending Session #36.

"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.

About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN^TM Standard for wireless metropolitan area networks. IEEE 802.16 is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless networking standardization.
