It’s been quite a while since “an acceptable level of violence” was expressed as any kind
of official policy and that kind of cynicism really isn’t to be found anymore (thank God). I
don’t think anyone or country or (legitimate) organization has "tolerance with terrorism or
loss [of life]."
It’s a matter of balance. Every human activity involves risk of some sort, even bathing in
a bathtub. But we decide to live our lives anyway. Every major city we could go to in this
world has some risk and some more than other— I’m pretty sure my risk of violent assault is
greater in San Francisco than it is in Bangkok. I just think the idea that the IEEE is a special
target and that risk increases at such a nerd fest is ludicrous.
Yes, it’s up to each individual to be responsible for himself or herself. Know your surroundings,
don’t be reckless, don’t flash large wads of money, avoid rowdy crowds, have a good time, eat
well. That’s what I plan on doing in Bangkok.
regards,
Dan.
