I think I agree with you on all the precautions and it should be applied to everyone here during the trip. It just matters if it’s
worth a trip on individual assessment. BTW, I have an odd feeling that people would still rather go to Bangkok given all the events than Ottawa, Canada where I live (Safe but pretty boring, I know).
As I wrote my first email, the second blast happened in Bangkok this morning (http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/08/18/432690310/a-second-explosion-hits-bangkok-as-police-track-down-suspect-in-first-blast)
which I think is near our hotel.

It’s a matter of balance. Every human activity involves risk of some sort, even bathing in
a bathtub. But we decide to live our lives anyway. Every major city we could go to in this
world has some risk and some more than other— I’m pretty sure my risk of violent assault is
greater in San Francisco than it is in Bangkok. I just think the idea that the IEEE is a special
target and that risk increases at such a nerd fest is ludicrous.
Yes, it’s up to each individual to be responsible for himself or herself. Know your surroundings,
don’t be reckless, don’t flash large wads of money, avoid rowdy crowds, have a good time, eat
well. That’s what I plan on doing in Bangkok.

Until I see an official travel warning from the government, and given the current situation, Bangkok is as save as London or
any other "big city in the US".
Let's try to avoid to stampede and remember 2013: we did not had such a discussion calling to cancel any meeting in the
US after April 15 that year.

I agree with Dan. Until recently, London was much more at risk of bombs than many places but people this did not stop coming here. Can anybody truly say going
anywhere else is safer.
Adrian, my company has already put a flag up on this trip. I would suggest that 802 gives people who do not want to travel to Bangkok the opportunity to pull
out without penalty (it may be the case that if people pull out now there is no penalty but I have not checked the refund policy).

I disagree. This supposed threat to an IEEE meeting is overstated. I don't see how a
technical conference would be considered a target. It would be an expensive change
and we'd probably end up in some horrible place like the Dallas airport Hilton again.

I seconded we may need to take this a bit more seriously. This IEEE meeting is for representatives of many companies worldwide, which can be an easy target for
them, rather than random individual tourists. We may need to start looking at alternative approach since we have only one month ahead.

Without the terrorist being caught, is it safe to IEEE meeting? IEEE meeting can be a good target for terrorists if they have political requirement.
