IEEE 802.16's Session #65 was held on 11-14 January 2010 in La Jolla, San Diego, CA, USA. This was an Interim Session of the Working Group. The Member Host was Lei Wang, with IEEE 802 serving as sponsor.

Attendance
The attendance list includes 216 individuals, excluding those attending primarily for the IEEE 802.16 IMT-Advanced Evaluation Group Coordination Meeting.

Task Group m (TGm): Advanced Air Interface
Task Group m (TGm) met and completed resolution of comments in Working Group Letter Ballot Recirculation #30b, in which draft P802.16m/D3 was under review. The WG decided to conclude this ballot and continue development of P802.16m/D4 under a new Working Group Letter Ballot #31 (3 February - 5 March). The TG issued a closing report and minutes.

License-Exempt Task Group
Following comment resolution in the License-Exempt Task Group, the Working Group agreed to issue a new draft P802.16h/D14 for Sponsor Ballot recirculation (26 January - 7 February). The TG issued a closing report, with minutes to follow.

Maintenance Task Group
The Maintenance Task Group addressed maintenance change requests. It also addressed comments arising the Reaffirmation Ballot of IEEE Std 802.16.2-2004; the subsequent recirculation ballot (19 January - 3 February) closed without comment. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.

GRIDMAN Study Group
The IEEE 802.16 GRIDMAN Study Group (on "Greater Reliability In Disrupted Metropolitan Area Networks") met for the first time. It drafted a Project Authorizatin Request (PAR) and submitted it for WG review. The WG accepted a modified version and agreed to forward that draft PAR to the IEEE 802 Executive Committee for consideration at the March IEEE 802 Plenary.

WG Project Planning Ad Hoc
The new WG Project Planning Ad Hoc met, reviewed contributions, and prepared a report suggesting the initiation of activities toward the development of new projects. The group developed a proposal for a Call for Interest meeting on "Future 802.16 Networks: Challenges and Possibilities". This meeting has been scheduled for the evening of 15 March at the IEEE 802 Plenary.

Liaison Activities
The ITU-R Liaison Group met through the week. Its work is summarized in the ITU-R Liaison Group Report. In particular:

Future Sessions

Working Group Minutes

About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN® Standard for wireless metropolitan area networks. IEEE 802.16 is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless networking standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is an archive of previous Session Reports. The IEEE 802.16 Interactive Calendar includes sessions and deadlines.

"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.

With the approval of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group, this report (7 February 2010 release) was drafted and edited by:

Roger Marks (r.b.marks@ieee.org)
Chair, IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards
