[RPRWG] FW: STP to be retired, RSTP taking over

Colleagues,

It appears that STP will most likely be replaced by RSTP as a consequence of
the adoption of P802.1y. The attached e-mail contains details for those who
are interested.

Best regards,

- Tom Alexander
Chief Editor, P802.17

>The 802.1 Interim Meeting in New Orleans, 2nd October 2002, agreed as part
>of ballot resolution on the successful task group ballot of P802.1y (802.1D

in
>Clause 8 would be removed by P802.1y, which will become a full revision of

>Once P802.1y has progressed through final working group and sponsor ballots
>to become 802.1D-2003 (current likely schedule), RSTP (the Rapid Spanning
>Tree Protocol) will be the only conformant option, rather than simply the
>preferred option as at present. This decision reflects the widespread and

>The meeting further directed the 802.1 secretariat to ensure that this
>decision was clearly communicated to those not at the meeting (which is why
>this item is not simply buried in the minutes). If significant practical
