Hi Chris, Talking about relative cost of a 4x25G TOSA to a 10x10G TOSA is OK as long as you are discussing material differences, yield expectations, power consumption impacts upon cost, and the like... not how much you pay for them. The problem with the earlier discussion is that the module "cost" being referred to was not truly making that kind of comparison. If you want to discuss modules, compare things like PCB area and make an assertion of the relative cost improvement due to size reduction, this is fine. If you want to discuss thermal management cost comparisons, this is fine too. Port density impacts upon system amortization, fine. This can be done through a presentation where peers can review it, but it has to be done comparing relevant materials, processes, yields, and all cost factors that can be compared at common volumes. All, This is always a difficult area to tread, so please tread carefully. Can you clarify the difference. I am having a hard time seeing the difference. Unless we discuss the cost of sand and such, there is a long value added chain that goes from raw material to chips, boxes, etc, to sub-components like carriers, to components, to modules, to systems. If we cannot discuss costs, we should eliminate the 5 Criteria. Maybe an email thread among friends? We are here to talk about IEEE standards, PMDs, and their relative costs. Dan Dove Chair, Next Generation 100G Ethernet Study Group |
