[8023-10GEPON] [POWER-BUDGET] 10G PIN sensitivity at ONU

All,

The two draft budgets presented on the Reflector (Effenberger 4/18 and
Takizawa 4/30) differ
in their assumption of whether a PIN or APD is most suitable for use in the
OLT in the Upstream case for PX10.

In one case, the use of an APD allows for low Tx average Tx power for PX10
(Effenberger).

In the other case, the use of a PIN requires a very high (+4 dBm) average Tx
power, requiring an expensive laser (Takizawa). The reason given for
requiring the PIN is a concern about the dynamic range required to for a
1G/10G dual-rate Rx. It is believed that overload of the APD by the 1G
signal may be a serious problem.

This seems to be an important point. I would like to ask Hamano-san (or some
other knowledgeable person) to explain these issues to the group, so they
can be discussed on the Reflector.

Since it is already Friday night in Japan, I welcome others to jump in with
relevant comments prior to Monday.
