IEEE 802.3 will meet November 12-15 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. All 802.3
meetings are scheduled for the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. The deadline for
the early registration discount is fast approaching (26 October). As
always, the LMSC session announcement, registration and current hotel
availability information can be found through the "Next IEEE 802 Plenary
session notice" link on our home web page (www.ieee802.org/3

for the plenary sessions, subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector

The opening 802.3 working group (WG) meeting will begin at 1:00 pm on
Monday, November 12, and the closing 802.3 WG meeting will be 1:00 pm on
Thursday, November 15. Task Force and Study Group meetings will follow
our typical schedule also found on our web site. The detailed agenda
will be provided and approved at the meeting; and the minutes of the
July meeting can serve as a prototype order for topics. As usual, task
force (TF), study group (SG), standing committee and any appropriate ad
hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing 802.3
meetings.
For any that have not attended our meetings this year, a new requirement
is in force requiring attendees to declare their employer and
affiliation to receive attendance credit and retain member privileges.
As usual, attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at
three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how
long a particular TF or SG might be meeting. The attendance books will
only be available on Thursday at the closing 802.3 plenary meeting (not
during the Thursday morning TF/SG meetings).
A number of WG decisions are expected during the 802.3 meetings (most on
Thursday). Depending on the amount of discussion, and though not
expected at this time, the Thursday meeting may run beyond our target
5:30 pm ending time. I look forward to seeing you in Atlanta.

802.3 BUSINESS (Mon & Thu)
In addition to regular WG business, there will be task force and study
group business based on the below status.
TASK FORCE / STUDY GROUP MEETINGS
P802.3ar Task Force - Congestion Management (Tue morning)
The P802.3ar Task Force remains in a stalemate condition that has not
been resolved. The current TF plan is to briefly meet at each plenary
(~ one hour) to discuss if there is any reason to revisit the current
802.3 stalemate (either to again attempt to advance the project or to
request the PAR be withdrawn). Those wishing to present during the task
force meeting should contact the 802.3 Chair.
P802.3at Task Force - DTE Power Enhancements (Tue-Thu)
The P802.3at project has been reviewing and commenting on an early
draft. At the time of this announcement, the October interim meeting to
continue addressing comments had not been held. A new draft may be
released following that meeting. The draft is not technically complete
with some fundamental issues yet to be resolved and incorporated.
Therefore, the task force will continue to work toward a technically
complete draft. TF members have been tasked with maintenance requests
related to DTE Power and proposed resolutions to those current requests
are included in that 802.3at draft. Those wishing to present during the
task force meetings should contact the Chair, Mr. Mike McCormack.
P802.3av Task Force - 10 Gb/s EPON (Tue-Thu)
The P802.3av Task Force is working on developing its draft amendment to
IEEE Std 802.3. The main focus of the November meeting will be to
discuss and approve PMD parameters for symmetric (10Gbps/10Gbps) and
asymmetric (10Gbps/1Gbps) EPON PHYs. The TF expects to create draft 1.0
after the November meeting. Those wishing to present during the task
force meetings should contact the Chair, Mr. Glen Kramer.
802.3ax, 802.3ay & Maintenance Task Force - (Wed)
The 802.3ax (P802.1AX) and 802.3ay (P802.3) working group ballots
process continues, with a comment resolution meeting scheduled for
October 17, followed by recirculation ballot if necessary. The TF hopes
to request advancement of both drafts to Sponsor ballot at the November
meeting. The task force will also address any maintenance requests
received and ready for consideration at the meeting. Questions about
maintenance activities can be addressed to maintenance Chair, Mr. David
Law.
P802.3az Task Force -- Energy Efficient Ethernet (Tue-Thu)
This activity now has an approved PAR, and consequently, the task force
will be organized. Work will therefore focus on proposals inclusion in
the project, and if necessary refinement of objectives for the project.
Coordination with IEEE 802.1 has begun and is planned to continue in
November (discussion on bridging protocols including AV Bridging).

Higher Speed Study Group (Tue-Thu)
The study group hit a significant milestone in July with approval of a
proposed PAR by 802.3. Deadlines did not allow that PAR to be
considered by LMSC in July, so that consideration will occur and be
supported by a tutorial presentation at this meeting. Because the PAR
was advanced out of the SG, work will focus on proposals for increasing
Ethernet's speed to 40 and 100 Gb/s. Those wishing to present during the
study group meetings should contact the Chair, Mr. John D'Ambrosia.
Rules, Interpretations (may not be required)
At present, there are no interpretations. Rules change ballot comments
(to be balloted) prior to November will be considered.
PROJECT AUTHORIZATION REQUESTS
IEEE 802.3 PARs
One new 802.3 PAR will be considered in November by LMSC and
subsequently in December by the IEEE-SA Standards Board. There has been
no notification to the WG Chair of any intent to reconsider the
P802.3ar, Congestion Management, modified PAR document previously
presented to the WG without action. The one proposed 802.3 PAR is from
the Higher Speed Study Group. A tutorial slot has also been requested
in support of the PAR.
