IEEE 802.16 Session #88 Report
IEEE 802.16's Session #88 was held on 11-14 Nov 2013 in Dallas, TX, USA. This Working Group (WG) plenary session was co-located with the IEEE 802 Plenary. The attendance list is posted.
An IEEE 802 Tutorial on Wireless SDN in Access and Backhaul was organized by the 802.16 WG Chair and presented to several hundred participants on 12 November. The IEEE 802.16 Working Group will host a followup "Birds of a Feather" (BOF) meeting on Wireless SDN during Session #89 in Los Angeles, inviting participants from all IEEE 802 Working Groups joining that interim session.
Project P802.16q progressed with the refinement of the draft Amendment Working Document based on contributions discussed, with agreement to develop Revision 3 of that document. A Call for Contributions was developed (for issuance on 2 December) to request further input toward Session #89. A closing report and minutes were posted.
Project P802.16r reviewed contributions and updated the Draft Architecture and Requirements document to Revision 4. A Call for Contributions and a closing report were issued.
Project P802.16.3 reviewed the outcome of an initial set of teleconferences and reviewed contributions. It scheduled a 12 December teleconference and prepared a Call for Contributions regarding the IEEE 802.16.3 Architecture and Requirements for Mobile Broadband Network Performance Measurements working document.
The ITU-R Liaison Group drafted a contribution to ITU-R WP 5D that was cleared through IEEE procedures for submission to ITU.
Project Planning Committee
The WG's Project Planning Committee reviewed several documents contributed to the Working Group that did not relate directly to ongoing Working Group activities. It also reviewed, and commented upon, project authorization requests within IEEE 802. A closing report and minutes were posted.
OmniRAN
The IEEE 802 OmniRAN EC Study Group, which originated in the IEEE 802.16 HetNet Study Group, addressed comments from within IEEE 802 regarding its proposed Project Authorization Request (PAR). The PAR, on "Network Reference Model and Functional Description of IEEE 802 Access Network," was approved by the IEEE 802 EC for submission to the IEEE-SA Standards Board. The PAR specifies that the standardization project will be assigned to the 802.1 Working Group. Until the project becomes active, the OmniRAN EC Study Group will continue through the March 2014 IEEE 802 Plenary.

Documents
Draft standards are available with a working group password or by purchase from IEEE-SA. Most IEEE 802.16 standards are available for free download via the Get IEEE 802® program. See the 802.16 publication list for details of published standards and drafts.
About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN® standards of IEEE 802.16 and 802.16.1 for wireless metropolitan area networks. It is also developing the IEEE 802.16.3 project on Mobile Broadband Network Performance Measurements. The IEEE 802.16 Working Group is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless network standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is an archive of previous Session Reports. The IEEE 802.16 Interactive Calendar includes sessions and deadlines.
"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.
